A Child’s Right to Be Wrong

I have been asked on more than one occasion how to respond to students who share inefficient strategies, or incorrect answers during group discussions. Should we take the time to correct them, or … should we simply avoid having them share in the first place? After all, we don’t want to take the chance that others in the class will emulate their strategies and launch a full-blown pandemic!

Inquiry Mathematics Gaining Momentum in Rapid City

The Rapid City School District began its journey toward improved mathematics instruction in 2002. Seven years later, they are showing significant progress! However, implementation is still not consistent across the district. Could there be some lessons here for us?

Principal Rick Owen is completely sold on inquiry-based math. In his mind, there wasn’t a choice: The district decided, and he follows their lead.

But it’s more than that.

He really loves it.

“I could never go back to a non-inquiry-based system,” he said.

Test scores at his school have increased, parents are enthusiastic, and his teachers — even those who didn’t come from an inquiry-based background — are on board.

“It’s so good, it makes others want to join in,” he said. “What’s more beautiful than a kid understanding it and being able to explain it?”
